1 to 3 inches of snow possible Sunday night as Alexandria braces for winter storm
Alexandria braces for winter storm; up to 3 inches of snow possible Sunday night
The City of Alexandria is monitoring an approaching winter weather system this weekend, with the National Weather Service forecasting a prolonged mix of rain and snow Sunday and 1 to 3 inches of accumulation possible Sunday night into Monday.
Tonight will be quiet, with a low around 41. Saturday brings clearing skies and a high near 54. The pattern shifts Saturday night, when rain is possible after 1 a.m., mixing with snow after 4 a.m.
Sunday is the most complicated day in the forecast. Expect rain and snow throughout, with a 90% chance of precipitation and a high near 40. Little accumulation is expected during the day. Sunday night, however, precipitation transitions to all snow after 10 p.m., with a low around 31 and gusts up to 20 mph — that is when 1 to 3 inches becomes possible. A 40% chance of snow lingers into Monday, mainly before 1 p.m.
Because the system is expected to produce wet snow, the city said it will not pre-treat roads ahead of the storm. Brine washes away and is ineffective under those conditions. Residents are asked to park in driveways where possible to give crews room to clear streets if conditions warrant.
Volunteer Alexandria’s Snow Buddy program connects volunteers with neighbors who need help clearing sidewalks and driveways. Updates from the city are available through eNews alerts and the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services social media accounts.
