ACPS announces virtual learning day for Wednesday; buildings remain closed
Meal distribution available at two locations

Alexandria City Public Schools will hold a synchronous virtual learning day on Wednesday as the city continues to recover from last weekend’s winter storm, Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced Tuesday.
All ACPS buildings and offices will remain closed for in-person learning and activities. Students will participate in live virtual instruction via Zoom, and all staff will work remotely.
Students in grades 3-12 should have their Chromebooks at home. Attendance will be taken through logging into Clever and Canvas. Schools will communicate daily bell schedules, and families should check their student’s Canvas or Clever account by 8 a.m. for specific schedule information.
No new content will be taught, and grades will not be assigned on virtual learning days, according to the announcement. Posting of grades will also be delayed due to this week’s closures.
Essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance staff and security, must still report if safe to do so.
Meal distribution
ACPS is participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s meal waiver program for the closure, allowing the district to provide free lunch meals to all children under 18.
Meals will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at two locations:
Alexandria City High School, 3330 King St., Door 34 (across from the garage)
Charles Barrett Elementary School, 1115 Martha Custis Drive, main entrance
Virtual learning details
Elementary students in grades PreK-2 will engage in two to three hours of choice board activities. Students in grades 3-5 will have four to five hours of synchronous instruction in literacy, math, science/social studies, and other subjects.
Secondary school students will follow their regular daily bell schedule with four blocks per day. Each block will include 45 minutes of live instruction followed by independent work time.
Services for students with disabilities will be provided in accordance with individualized education plans. English learner students will receive direct services from EL teachers.
