ACPS School Board launches new website to improve transparency
The site aims to make board decisions and processes easier for residents to follow
The Alexandria City Public Schools School Board has launched a new website designed to help residents better understand its work without having to attend every meeting or read through lengthy board packets.
The site, introduced Wednesday by board members Kelly Carmichael Booz and Alex Scioscia, both representing District B, will serve as a centralized hub for plain-language explanations of major decisions, committee updates, and community information. The board also announced a new presence on Bluesky, the social media platform.
Board member Donna Kenley previewed the launch at the board’s Jan. 8 meeting during an Operational Excellence Committee update. Carmichael Booz and Scioscia were appointed as website co-editors under committee assignments approved at that meeting.
“We know that most people don’t have the time or desire to attend every meeting, watch hours of recordings, or read through full board packets,” the board members wrote in an introductory post. “That’s why you elect us: to do the work on behalf of Alexandria and to be accountable for the decisions we make.”
The website grew out of feedback the board received during the elementary school redistricting process, when some members shared updates on personal websites to help explain complex maps and timelines. Community members said those posts made the process easier to follow.
Rather than relying on individual board member sites, the board decided to create an official platform that would remain consistent regardless of who is serving.
The site will not include personal opinion pieces, campaign content, or confidential information. During election season, after the June filing deadline through November, personal statements from board members who are candidates will pause, with the site focusing instead on committee updates and official statements from the board chair.
