ACPS to resume normal schedule Thursday
First full day without delays or closures since ice storm
Alexandria City Public Schools will return to normal schedules and operations Thursday, Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced Wednesday, the first full day without delays or closures since the ice storm hit Jan. 25.
All schools and offices will open on time. All activities and transportation will operate as scheduled.
Students were out of school buildings for 11 days—from Jan. 23 through Feb. 1—due to a professional learning day, a teacher work day, and five consecutive days of virtual learning caused by the storm. Schools reopened on Tuesday and Wednesday with two-hour delays.
The announcement comes as the city’s snow response continues. Crews have hauled more than 5,000 loads of snow and are now working through more than 2,000 intersections, Mayor Alyia Gaskins said Wednesday. Each intersection can take over an hour to clear.
Crews are starting in the West End—the city’s highest-population area—and moving east, with a focus on visibility and ADA accessibility. Gaskins said operations are adjusting as more cars return to the road and pedestrians fill the sidewalks.
The top 311 report remains sidewalks needing attention. Sidewalk enforcement resumed Tuesday, starting with warnings.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding during this recent weather event,” Kay-Wyatt said.
