Alexandria City High School football coach named fall coach of the year
Rodney Hughey led Titans to best start in more than 30 years, helped launch middle school program
Alexandria City High School football coach Rodney Hughey has been named the athletics program’s fall coach of the year after leading the Titans to one of their strongest seasons in more than three decades.
Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced the recognition during Thursday’s school board meeting.
“He led our Titans football team to one of the best starts in over 30 years,” Kay-Wyatt said. “Earned six victories and returned us to the playoffs.”

The playoff appearance marked a significant milestone for the program.
The fall coach of the year honor is the latest recognition for Hughey. In September 2024, he was named Washington Commanders Coach of the Week, an NFL initiative that highlights high school coaches who demonstrate dedication to their programs, player health and safety, and community impact. The recognition included a $2,000 donation to the football program from the Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation.
“Coach Hughey not only leads by example in promoting player safety and excellence in competition, but he also plays a pivotal role in building character and a sense of community among his team,” Executive Director of Athletics and Student Activities James Parker said at the time.
Hughey is credited with transforming the trajectory of the football program and the lives of students who wear the Titan jersey, according to the district. His personal investment includes ensuring players start their day with focus and purpose.
Hughey’s contributions extend beyond the varsity level. He was instrumental in launching Alexandria City Public Schools’ middle school football program.
“Our middle school program took off with so much excitement last year,” Kay-Wyatt said. “If you haven’t had a chance to go to any of our middle school athletic programs, please do so because we know that athletics really provide strong fundamentals, discipline and pride for our students.”
