Minnie Howard competition pool reopens after week-long filtration system repair
Aquatics staff and contractors worked to minimize disruptions while coordinating warranty repair
The competition pool at Minnie Howard Aquatics Facility has reopened following a mechanical issue with its filtration system that forced an unexpected closure earlier this month.
The pool, which shut down on Nov. 10, experienced problems with its filtration system that required immediate attention. Aquatics staff manually troubleshot the system in the pump room before coordinating a warranty repair with the original installer.
The repair process included rebuilding the affected portion of the filter tank, expediting replacement parts, and bringing in specialists to complete the work as quickly as possible, according to city officials.
During the week-long closure, the Minnie Howard and Chinquapin aquatics teams worked together to accommodate scheduled programs, swim team rentals, and the Alexandria City High School dive team to prevent major service disruptions.
The facility’s warm water training pool remained open with extended public swim hours to provide additional options for residents. The training pool, which is kept 10 degrees warmer than the competition pool, is designed for therapeutic swimming.
The competition pool is now fully operational. The city thanked the community for its patience during the repair process.
