Alexandria Library seeks artists to transform discarded chairs into America 250 artwork
Upcycling project will raise funds for library foundation; applications accepted through Jan. 9

The Alexandria Library is calling on local and regional artists to turn trash into treasure as part of a new community art project celebrating the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.
The library announced Friday it is accepting applications from artists to transform nearly two dozen chairs slated for disposal into original works of art. The upcycling initiative, titled “Take a Seat for Alexandria,” will serve as a fundraiser for the Alexandria Library Foundation.
Artists interested in participating must submit applications before Jan. 9. A panel of library staff and local artists will review submissions, with selected applicants to be notified Jan. 20.
The project’s unifying theme is America 250, tying into nationwide celebrations of the country’s semiquincentennial in 2026. Artists must incorporate the theme of 250 years of history into their work.
According to the library’s guidelines, artwork must be suitable for display in an all-ages environment and use nontoxic materials, with sustainable materials encouraged. Completed pieces cannot exceed 1 foot around the perimeter of the chair or 3 feet higher than the back. The chairs do not need to remain functional for sitting but must be durable enough to transport between locations.
Artists must also submit an artist statement with their completed work. The library reserves the right to reject pieces it deems inappropriate or that do not adhere to the guidelines.
Alexandria played a significant role in the American Revolution, from the creation of the Fairfax Resolves to serving as the hometown of George Washington. Museums and organizations across the city are marking the milestone through tours, exhibitions, public art, and programs.
The library will host events, exhibits, and activities throughout 2025 and 2026, celebrating the nation’s history. The chair project joins a roster of city programming that includes the signature “Sails on the Potomac” event planned for June 2026.
Once completed, the decorated chairs will be displayed at library branches this spring as part of the All Alexandria Reads program. The artwork will then be auctioned to the public in late spring, with all proceeds benefiting the Alexandria Library Foundation.
The foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the community through advocacy and supplemental funding of the library system. It supports programming for children, teens and adults, provides resources including books and updated technology, and funds projects such as murals and renovations. The library sees more than 1.4 million visitors and web users annually.
The initiative marks a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Alexandria Library, the Alexandria Library Foundation, the city of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and the local artist community.
Organizers said the program aims to make a positive impact through creativity, collaboration and sustainable practices.
