Alexandria Mentoring Partnership marks 20th anniversary during January mentoring month
City to issue proclamation as organization hosts info sessions, library events
The Alexandria Mentoring Partnership is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month with a series of events aimed at recruiting volunteer mentors for the city’s young people.
January is both Alexandria Mentoring Month and National Mentoring Month. The City Council will formally proclaim the local observance at its Jan. 13 meeting, with mentees, mentors, and staff from AMP partner programs invited to attend.
Founded in 2006, AMP comprises local mentoring programs with a shared mission to ensure quality volunteer mentors and programming are available for any young Alexandrian who needs them.
Residents interested in becoming mentors can attend one of three free Mentoring 101 info sessions this month:
Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at 1108 Jefferson St.
Jan. 24 at 11 a.m., virtual
Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at 1108 Jefferson St.
The sessions cover what a mentor is, mentoring needs in Alexandria, partner programs and how a few hours a month can make a difference in a young person’s life.
Throughout January, AMP will host feature tables at three library branches: Ellen Coolidge Burke, James M. Duncan and Kate Waller Barrett. The displays will include information about mentoring programs and a curated collection of mentoring-related books.
The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities will also share mentoring-focused content on its Instagram and Facebook pages throughout the month, featuring AMP programs and mentor perspectives.
