ACPS closes offices, cancels teacher work day due to winter storm
Students were already scheduled to be off Monday

Alexandria City Public Schools has closed all offices and canceled a scheduled teacher work day Monday as a major winter storm continues to impact the region.
Students were already scheduled to be off Monday, following a professional learning day Friday. The closure means teachers and staff also will not report.
Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced the closure Sunday, citing the state of emergency in Virginia and inclement weather forecast through the early morning hours.
All in-person afternoon and evening activities on school grounds are also canceled Monday, including programming provided by community organizations or the city, as well as athletics, band and other extracurricular activities. The district also canceled all activities on school grounds Sunday.
Schools will send information to families regarding any make-up days or new event dates.
Essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance shop employees and security staff, should contact their direct supervisors for reporting instructions.
The closure comes as the National Weather Service warns that hazardous travel conditions could impact the Monday morning commute. Sleet, heavy at times, is expected to continue Sunday afternoon with an additional 2 to 4 inches possible. Freezing rain is expected through 9 p.m.
Monday will be mostly sunny but cold, with a high near 29°F and wind gusts up to 30 mph. Wind chills will drop to -1 Monday night.
A local emergency declared by the city manager Saturday remains in effect.
Families with questions about community programs should check with their service provider or the city at alexandriava.gov/Alert.The full message from ACPS.
