Alexandria schools superintendent to present 10-year capital budget Thursday
Board will also hear updates on high school academies, approve course catalog

Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt will present her proposed capital improvement program budget for fiscal years 2027-2036 at Thursday’s school board meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the School Board Meeting Room, 1340 Braddock Place.

According to a memo from Principal Planner Robert Ruiz and Director of Capital Programs Sophie Huemer, the superintendent has prepared a capital improvement program budget “that responds to City guidance while prioritizing as many needs as possible in accordance with the FY2027 Budget Priorities.”
The memo states that adoption of the capital improvement program is “an annual commitment to a series of projects with estimated costs based on current knowledge, market conditions, and projects.”
School officials told City Council during a budget retreat on Saturday they need $19.3 million to maintain current service levels, but can expect only a $4.2 million increase from the city, a 1.5% boost that represents the most favorable budget guidance given to any partner agency.
Supporting documents will be uploaded following the presentation on Thursday.
The board will also receive updates on two major initiatives at Alexandria City High School.
Officials will present a year two implementation update on the high school’s academy model, which consolidated from six to five career-themed academies serving 4,450 students across four campuses. The five academies are Business and Government; Education, Liberal Arts and Human Services; General Studies; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; and Visual, Performing and Applied Arts.
The update will focus on refining structures, reducing intercampus transitions and implementing a multi-tiered system of supports. The academy model aims to connect classroom instruction to real-world experiences through project-based learning and industry partnerships.
The board will also consider approving the 2026-27 secondary schools program of studies on its consent calendar. The program includes 63 course additions, revisions or deletions for grades 6-12.
The meeting will be broadcast live on cable channel 71 and streamed via Zoom. The meeting is open ot the public and community members can sign up to speak through an online form by noon on Wednesday or register in person between 5:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. on Thursday for one of five reserved speaking slots.
Meeting agendas and documents are available on the ACPS BoardDocs website.
