Alexandria seeking residents to fill 78 openings on city boards and commissions
Applications due Jan. 2 for volunteer positions advising City Council
Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill 78 vacancies across 32 of the city’s more than 70 boards and commissions, with applications due Jan. 2.
The volunteer positions advise Council on topics ranging from housing affordability to gang prevention to historic preservation. Time commitments are typically about two hours per month, and terms range from two to five years depending on the board.
Council will consider appointments at its Jan. 13 meeting.
Some positions require specific qualifications or organizational affiliations. The Environmental Policy Commission is seeking a member from the field of urban planning, while the Public Health Advisory Commission needs a physician nominated by the Medical Society of Northern Virginia. The Transportation Commission has two vacancies that must be filled by members of the Planning Commission and the Alexandria Transit Company Board, respectively.
Other positions are open to any city resident. The Commission for Women, Commission for the Arts, and Sister Cities Committee are among those seeking general citizen members.
Boards with the most openings include the Historic Alexandria Resources Commission with seven, the Commission on Persons with Disabilities and Gang Prevention Community Task Force with six each, and the Commission on Employment with five.
Applicants may apply for only one board at a time. Residents must submit applications electronically by 5 p.m. Jan. 2 at alexandriava.gov/Boards.
