Alexandria Sheriff Casey tapped for Spanberger transition team
Casey joins Mayor Gaskins, Councilman Aguirre as third city official named to governor-elect's 'United for Virginia's Future' committee
Alexandria Sheriff Sean Casey has been appointed to Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s transition committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security Policy, making him the third city official named to the incoming administration’s “United for Virginia’s Future” committee.
Casey, a 21-year law enforcement veteran now in his second term as Alexandria’s sheriff, will serve on the Criminal Justice/Corrections Subcommittee. The eight-member panel is charged with identifying priorities and recommending policy in those areas.
“I’m extremely honored to be among those helping to support the Governor-elect and her transition team,” Casey said. “In Virginia, we’re fortunate to have a number of highly knowledgeable and experienced public safety leaders and it is indeed a privilege to have been selected.”
Casey joins Mayor Alyia Gaskins and City Councilman Canek Aguirre, who were named to Spanberger’s transition committee in November. The committee includes more than 100 Virginians tasked with preparing Spanberger’s administration ahead of her January inauguration.
Virginia’s public safety and homeland security policy, overseen by the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security, coordinates state, local and federal strategy for disaster preparedness, counter-terrorism, emergency response and infrastructure protection.
Casey, an Alexandria native and Virginia Tech graduate, was recently reelected to lead the city’s sheriff’s office after first winning the post four years ago.
Spanberger, a Democrat, defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in the Nov. 4 election.
