Alexandria Sheriff's Office, Detention Center earn reaccreditation from national corrections association
Auditors find agency in full compliance with all mandatory standards; office has held ACA accreditation since 1989
The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office and William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center have been reaccredited by the American Correctional Association, with auditors finding the agency in full compliance with all mandatory standards and nearly perfect compliance across the board.
The ACA’s Commission on Accreditation for Corrections presented the office with an official certificate of accreditation during its winter conference. Sheriff Sean Casey accepted the award Feb. 7 following a panel review with commission members. He was joined by Capt. Tonya Moss, Policy and Compliance Director LaTanya Ervin and Accreditation Manager Steven Buttie.

The accreditation covers all facets of jail operations, including administration and management, institutional operations and services, physical plant and inmate programs.
Three auditors conducted a three-day onsite inspection of the detention center in October, interviewing inmates, staff and contractors during their visit. The review found the sheriff’s office in 100% compliance with all 58 applicable mandatory standards and 99.7% compliance with 309 of 310 applicable non-mandatory standards.
“We are very proud to have maintained our ACA accreditation and to know that our policies and practices continue to meet their rigorous and highly respected standards,” Casey said. “These numbers are extremely impressive and reflect our commitment to meeting and, whenever possible, exceeding best practices.”
The sheriff’s office holds a “Triple Crown Award” from the National Sheriffs’ Association for achieving simultaneous accreditation from the ACA, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The office has maintained continuous ACA accreditation since 1989.
