City launches biennial transportation survey, seeking input on how Alexandrians get around
AlexMoves questionnaire open through Dec. 28
The City of Alexandria wants to know how you’re getting to the grocery store, the gym, and your favorite restaurant, and what might get you to leave the car at home more often.
The 2025 AlexMoves survey launched today and will remain open through Dec. 28. The questionnaire takes about 8–11 minutes to complete and is available in English and Spanish.
The city has conducted the survey every two years since 2016 in partnership with polling firm Polco, building a nearly decade-long dataset on local travel habits. Unlike many transportation studies that focus narrowly on commuting, AlexMoves captures how residents move around for all types of trips, errands, recreation, dining out, and visiting friends.
This year’s survey asks respondents how they traveled to various destinations over the past month and which modes they used, whether walking, biking, driving alone, or taking transit. It also gauges what factors might encourage more use of public transportation, cycling, or walking, such as better lighting, more bike lanes, or improved transit reliability.
The questionnaire includes a check on local transit awareness, asking whether respondents know that all DASH buses are now free to ride and whether they’ve heard of GO Alex, the city’s transportation assistance program.
City planners use the data to track shifts in travel behavior over time and to inform long-range planning efforts, including the Alexandria Mobility Plan adopted in 2021.
Residents who received survey materials in the mail should use the link included in that mailing, as those responses are tracked separately to ensure a statistically representative sample.
Reports from previous survey years are available on the city’s long-range transportation planning webpage.
