City to host community workshops on Duke Street land use plan
Planning Commission to review draft framework for auto-oriented corridor Tuesday night
The city of Alexandria will hold three community workshops later this month to gather input on the Duke Street Land Use Plan, officials announced Tuesday, the same day the Planning Commission is set to review the draft framework.
The commission will hold a work session at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the long-awaited plan for one of the city’s most auto-oriented corridors. The session is open to the public but will not include public testimony.
The workshops, scheduled for Jan. 20-22, will allow residents to engage with material presented at a December open house and participate in facilitated discussions with city staff and neighbors.
Each 90-minute session will include up to three conversation topics based on the interests of registered participants. The city is capping attendance at roughly 25 people per workshop to keep discussions conversational and said it may add sessions if demand exceeds capacity.
“If you aren’t able to join for the whole time, please register anyway and join for how much you’re able,” the city said in its registration materials.
Participants who register for a session that fills up will be invited to attend their second-choice workshop.
The first workshop will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Port City Brewing, 3950 Wheeler Ave. The second and third sessions will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and Thursday, Jan. 22, at the same time at Patrick Henry Recreation Center, 4653 Taney Ave.
Light refreshments and snacks will be provided at each session.
The workshops will cover the same information presented at the Dec. 10 open house. Materials are also available through an online community open house, which closes Jan. 23.
