City to outline City Hall renovation plans at Jan. 8 virtual meeting
Session will cover construction schedule, parking and transportation impacts
The city will host a virtual community meeting next week to discuss the upcoming City Hall renovation project, which is set to begin in January.
The pre-construction meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Residents can learn about the construction schedule and hours, as well as parking and transportation impacts. The city’s community liaison for the project will also be introduced.
The meeting is free, but registration is required.
City Hall, which is more than 100 years old, will temporarily close for renovations that officials say are needed to repair aging building components, improve technology and accessibility, enhance security, and support community engagement. Market Square, which has served as a civic gathering place since the city’s founding in 1749, will also be renovated. The project is expected to take two to three years.
More than 300 city employees have already relocated from City Hall to temporary or permanent spaces throughout Alexandria. The City Attorney’s Office will relocate to 123 N. Pitt St., fifth floor.
City Council chambers will move to the Del Pepper Community Resource Center at 4850 Mark Center Dr. The Planning Commission will hold the first meeting at the temporary location on Jan. 6, followed by City Council on Jan. 13.
The Old Town Farmers’ Market, which has operated at Market Square since 1753, will move to the 100 block of North Royal Street and the courtyard at Tavern Square starting Jan. 11. The market will continue to operate every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.
The Market Square Garage will close by Jan. 17. Farmers’ market visitors can use the Tavern Square garage at 418 Cameron St., which will offer free parking on Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
