CVS on Richmond Highway closes permanently
The store and pharmacy closure is part of CVS's ongoing nationwide restructuring, which has shuttered more than 900 locations since 2022.
The CVS store and pharmacy at 2601 Richmond Highway has closed permanently.
A handwritten sign posted in the window of the store states: “Store Permanently Closed As Of 01/22/2026.”
The closure caught some nearby residents off guard. The location no longer appears on the CVS mobile app or website, though some users noticed the store had disappeared from the app last week.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to close the CVS Pharmacy at 2601 Richmond Highway in Alexandria, VA on January 21, 2026,” CVS spokesperson Roslyn Guarino said in a statement. “All prescriptions have been transferred to the nearby CVS Pharmacy at 415 E Monroe Avenue to ensure patients have uninterrupted access to pharmacy care.”
Employees have been offered comparable roles within the company, Guarino said.
The closure is part of CVS’s ongoing nationwide restructuring. The company closed 900 stores between 2022 and 2024 and announced plans to shutter an additional 270 locations in 2025. Roughly 10 stores were slated to close across the D.C., Maryland and Virginia region as part of that effort, according to FOX 5.
“Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions,” Guarino said. “Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community’s store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community.”
CVS said it has 18 remaining pharmacy locations in Alexandria.
