Department of Beer and Wine reopens today in new Mount Vernon Avenue location
Del Ray specialty shop returns after months-long closure with soft opening
Department of Beer and Wine will open its doors today at a new location two blocks from its former home, marking the neighborhood shop’s return after months of closure.
The specialty retailer will open at 2805 Mt. Vernon Ave., offering craft beer, sustainable wines, and gourmet foods. The store will maintain limited hours through November before hosting a grand opening tentatively scheduled for December.
“Chaos is happening,” the business posted on social media Friday as staff prepared for the soft opening.
The shop closed its original location at 2724 Richmond Highway in late March after more than seven years. The move, though short in distance, required the business to obtain a new license from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority and sell its entire alcoholic beverage inventory. The store is gradually restocking its selection of craft beer, organic and natural wines, and specialty food items, including hot sauces, chocolates, and frozen foods.
The new location offers expanded parking and positions the business on Mount Vernon Avenue, away from construction on Richmond Highway.
Department of Beer and Wine will relaunch its crowler club and wine club memberships in December. The shop specializes in local options alongside international selections, with an emphasis on organic, biodynamic, and low-intervention wines.
Hours today and Sunday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The business offers delivery and in-store pickup.
