Fire displaces 140 residents at Key Towers apartment complex
Accidental blaze damages electrical system, cuts power to entire building
A fire broke out early Thursday at Key Towers, a 13-floor apartment complex in Alexandria’s Landmark/Van Dorn neighborhood, displacing approximately 140 residents after flames caused significant damage to the building’s electrical system, officials said.
Alexandria Fire Department crews extinguished the blaze at 6060 Tower Court and evacuated all residents by 5:34 a.m., when the department first reported on social media a significant public safety presence at the scene. No injuries were reported.
Alexandria Police Department officers also responded to assist fire crews and other public safety partners, police said.
The fire was later determined to be accidental, the fire department said in an afternoon statement. Flames were contained to the building’s high-voltage electrical room, and the Fire Marshal’s Office closed the case Thursday.
The damage left the building without power and other essential services, forcing residents to temporarily relocate while repairs are completed. The city’s Department of Community and Human Services, the American Red Cross and partner agencies are assisting those affected.
Key Towers offers studio through three-bedroom units and participates in the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program, which provides rental assistance to lower-income residents. Gates Hudson manages the property.
No timeline for when residents might return to their units was immediately available.
