Five file for City Council seat ahead of Feb. 21 primary
Marks, Laderach, Gomez, Sumpter and Tapia will compete for McPike's seat
Five Democrats filed to run for the City Council seat being vacated by Councilman Kirk McPike, the Alexandria Democratic Committee announced Thursday.
The candidates are Sandy Marks, Tim Laderach, Roberto Gomez, Charles Sumpter and Cesar Madison Tapia.
Marks is the former ADC chair. Laderach is the Economic Opportunities Commission chair and Del Ray Citizens Association president. Gomez is the founder of Cornerstone Craftsman, a youth trades program. Sumpter co-founded Safe Space NOVA and finished third in last month’s SD39 firehouse primary. Tapia is a teacher and Army veteran.
The filing deadline was from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the ADC office. The filing fee was $750.
The ADC will hold a firehouse primary on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Beatley Library (5005 Duke St.) and Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center (25 W. Reed Ave.).
McPike is resigning from council effective Feb. 9. The winner of the Feb. 21 firehouse primary will be the Democratic nominee in a special election likely to be held April 21 alongside a redistricting referendum.
The Alexandria Republican City Committee has not announced a nominating process for the council race.
