Frost advisory issued for Alexandria, surrounding areas
National Weather Service warns overnight temperatures could drop to 33 degrees
The National Weather Service issued a frost advisory Thursday for Alexandria and surrounding areas, warning that overnight temperatures could drop to 33 degrees and damage sensitive outdoor plants.
The advisory takes effect at 1 a.m. Friday and remains in place until 8 a.m.
Areas covered include Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Fairfax, Stafford, King George, Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park, along with portions of the District of Columbia and central and southern Maryland.
“Temperatures as low as 33 will result in frost formation,” the advisory stated. “Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.”
The weather service urged residents to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
The city’s Winter Shelter, located at 2355-A Mill Road, operates daily from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through April 15, 2026, providing a safe, warm place for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The city also offers warming centers at libraries and recreation centers during the winter months.
Residents concerned about unsheltered individuals can call 703-746-5700, text 703-346-5599 or contact Alex 311.
