Gaskins, Aguirre named to Spanberger transition team
Alexandria mayor, councilman among more than 100 Virginians selected for 'United for Virginia's Future' committee
Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger on Friday announced her transition committee, tapping two Alexandria officials to help lay the groundwork for her incoming administration.
Alexandria City Councilman Canek Aguirre and Mayor Alyia Gaskins were named to the “United for Virginia’s Future” transition committee, which will prepare Spanberger’s administration ahead of her inauguration.

“These Virginians not only bring together deep ties from across every region of our Commonwealth, but the experience, integrity, and know-how required to deliver the pragmatic and principled leadership that Virginians overwhelmingly voted for this November,” Spanberger said in a statement.
Spanberger, a Democrat, defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in the Nov. 4 election, winning 57.56% of the vote statewide. In Alexandria, Spanberger won 83.11% of the vote with 52,230 votes to Earle-Sears’ 10,424.
The committee, led by transition co-chairs, will focus on lowering costs, expanding economic opportunity, increasing business investment in Virginia’s economy and creating a safer commonwealth, according to the announcement.
Gaskins said on social media Friday night she was “honored to join Governor-elect Spanberger’s United for Virginia’s Future transition team alongside leaders from across the Commonwealth.”
“Together, we’ll focus on lowering costs, strengthening our economy, and keeping Virginia families safe,” Gaskins said.
Aguirre and Gaskins join more than 100 other Virginians from across the state on the committee, including business leaders, former elected officials and community organizers.
“These leaders are united for one purpose: putting Virginia first,” Spanberger said. “They will help ensure my administration is ready on day one to begin saving Virginians money, protecting Virginia’s jobs and small businesses, and strengthening the security of our Commonwealth.”
The transition committee includes former U.S. representatives, former state cabinet secretaries and local government officials from across Virginia.
