House District 5 firehouse primary set for Tuesday, January 20
Candidates must file by Sunday; voters must be registered in the district
The Alexandria Democratic Committee announced Friday that it will hold a firehouse primary on Tuesday, January 20, to select the Democratic nominee for House District 5.
Voting will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at two locations:
Charles E. Beatley Jr. Library, 5005 Duke Street
Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe Street
To vote, you must live and be registered to vote in House District 5. Check your district here.
As with this week's Senate District 39 firehouse primary, voters will be asked to sign a form stating they are a Democrat, do not intend to support a candidate opposed to the Democratic nominee, and have not participated in another party's nomination process this year
Who’s running
Former School Board member Eileen Cassidy Rivera and City Councilman Kirk McPike have announced their candidacies. Others may still join — the filing deadline is Sunday, January 18, from 1-4 p.m. at the Alexandria Democratic Committee office (2101A Mount Vernon Avenue). Candidates must submit a declaration of candidacy form and a $360 filing fee.
All announced candidates have been invited to join The Alexandria Brief for live one-on-one virtual conversations over the coming days. Dates and times will be announced soon.
What’s next
The winner will face a Republican nominee in the February 10 special election — the same day as the Senate District 39 race between Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker and Republican Julie Lineberry.
The consolidated ballot comes after Bennett-Parker announced Thursday she is resigning her House seat effective February 18, the same date Sen. Adam Ebbin’s resignation takes effect.
House District 5 is entirely within Alexandria, stretching from Old Town through Del Ray and Carlyle to the Eisenhower Valley corridor.
