Housing 2040 seeks public feedback on affordable housing, condo recommendations
Comments accepted through Jan. 4 on draft preservation and common interest community strategies
The city’s Housing 2040 initiative is accepting public feedback on two sets of draft recommendations aimed at preserving affordable housing and strengthening condominium communities.
Comments will be accepted through Jan. 4 and will help shape a second draft of the recommendations planned for release in mid to late February.
The feedback period comes as Alexandria grapples with a steep decline in affordable housing. The city has lost nearly two-thirds of its naturally affordable housing since 2000—some 11,000 apartments that once housed working families now priced beyond their reach. Another 900 subsidized affordable units face expiring commitments by 2040 if their affordability isn’t extended.
In November, housing officials unveiled a 40-strategy plan to address the crisis, though many key tenant protections require state legislative approval and funding sources remain uncertain.
The Affordable Housing Preservation project focuses on investing in the affordability, livability and financial viability of the city’s existing housing stock. Draft recommendations and strategies are available in English, Spanish and Amharic, with additional background available through a Nov. 17 meeting presentation and recording.
Residents can provide feedback on the preservation recommendations through an online form at research.net/r/AlexandriaVA-PreservationRecommendations or by contacting project manager Chris Do at christopher.do@alexandriava.gov.
The Common Interest Communities project, which focuses on strengthening condos and other common interest communities, released its draft recommendations during a Nov. 15 virtual community meeting. The presentation and recording are available online.
Feedback on the common interest community recommendations can be submitted through the Housing 2040 Comment Form, available in English, Spanish, and Amharic, or by emailing project manager Kim Cadena at kimberly.cadena@alexandriava.gov.
