The volunteer-run tradition, which began with a simple bet among friends in 1986, has grown from a single skier braving the chilly December waters into a full holiday production featuring costumed characters on water skis, jet skis, and wakeboards.
Crowds gathered from Founders Park to Ford’s Landing for the 1 p.m. show, with many arriving early to catch the popular pre-show starring the Grinch on his jet ski. The main event featured Santa and his elves facing off against the Grinch in the annual water show, with costumed elves performing tricks on water skis and reindeer taking to the river.

This year’s milestone celebration featured the return of several original volunteers, including the original Santa from the 1986 debut. The main show also brought out fan favorites like Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie and tin soldiers.

The production requires extensive coordination with the Coast Guard, Alexandria Fire Department, and local partners, including the Old Dominion Boat Club. Performers wear dry suits beneath their costumes to protect against the cold water, though organizers say the conditions remain challenging.
Santa and other characters greeted families after the show at the gazebo near Blackwall Hitch.
