Kerala-trained chef cuts ribbon on new Indian restaurant in Alexandria
Sundara Indian Restaurant & Cafe opens Friday at Braddock Place with 50-plus dishes, full bar and catering

Sundara Indian Restaurant & Cafe held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning at its Braddock Place location, with a grand opening set for Friday.
The locally owned restaurant, at 1320 Braddock Place, Suite 105, hosted the ceremony at 9 a.m. with complimentary coffee and food samples, according to a Facebook post by the restaurant. Sundara will officially open for business at 7 a.m. Friday.
Alexandria Councilwoman Jacinta Greene attended the ceremony. “It was a pleasure celebrating your grand opening with you,” Greene wrote on Instagram Wednesday morning, welcoming the restaurant to the city.
At the helm is Chef Subheesh Manikoth, who grew up cooking traditional South Indian food in Kerala, India, before earning a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts from the Institute of Hotel Management. He has worked as a head chef at multiple restaurants across India, the Middle East, Europe and the United States, cooking Indian, French, Italian and American cuisine, according to the restaurant’s website, sundaraoldtown.com.
The menu will feature more than 50 dishes spanning North and South Indian specialties, Italian classics, American comfort food and fresh-baked goods. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available, with spice levels ranging from no-spice and mild to bold and traditional.
Sundara will operate as a cafe-style setting for breakfast and lunch, with a full-service dining experience and bar available in the evenings and on weekends. The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.
Hours will be 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 7 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
Catering services will also be available, with customizable multicultural menus for weddings, celebrations and other events.
