Metro closures to disrupt Alexandria commuters, airport travelers this spring
Crystal City station will close 10 weekends for construction; free shuttles to bridge gaps on Blue, Yellow lines
Metro riders heading to Reagan National Airport or points north face significant disruptions this spring as the transit agency begins weekend closures of the Crystal City station for the construction of a new entrance.
Beginning Feb. 14, the Crystal City station will be closed for 10 weekends through late June, halting train service between the Pentagon City and National Airport stations. For three of those weekends, the National Airport station will also close, extending the service gap to Potomac Yard.
The closures will affect Yellow Line riders traveling from Huntington, Eisenhower Avenue, King Street, and Braddock Road stations, as well as Blue Line passengers from Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street.
Metro will provide free shuttle buses between Pentagon City and National Airport during the closures. When National Airport station is also closed — March 7-8, May 9-10, and May 16-17 — shuttles will extend to Potomac Yard.
The work supports the construction of a second entrance at Crystal City, a joint project with Arlington County expected to open in spring 2027. The new entrance will include street-level access, upgraded elevators to improve ADA compliance and better crowd distribution during peak hours.
During affected weekends, Blue and Yellow line trains will run in split segments approximately every 12 minutes outside the closure zone.
Crystal City station closure dates are Feb. 14-16, Feb. 21-22, Feb. 28-March 1, March 7-8, May 9-10, May 16-17, May 30-31, June 6-7, June 13-14 and June 19-21.
