More than 24,000 cast Election Day ballots by 4 p.m. in Alexandria
Turnout reaches 53% when combined with early voting; polls close at 7 p.m.

More than 15,000 Alexandria voters cast ballots by midday Tuesday as polls remained open for the general election.
More than 24,000 Alexandria voters cast ballots by 4 p.m. Tuesday as polls entered their final hours in the general election.
As of 4 p.m., 24,134 people voted at Alexandria precincts — 23.93% of registered voters — according to the city’s Office of Voter Registration and Elections. Combined with 29,881 early votes cast through Saturday, 53,889 ballots have been counted, representing 53.44% of registered voters.

Polls close at 7 p.m. Voters must be in line by 7 p.m. to cast a ballot.
Election Day turnout by 4 p.m. had reached 73% of the total Election Day votes cast in 2021, when 33,010 voters cast ballots at the polls throughout the day. With three hours remaining, Alexandria appeared on track to match or exceed 2021’s total turnout of 58,485 votes (60.73%).
Voters cast 8,267 ballots between noon and 4 p.m. — an average of about 2,067 per hour during the afternoon period. By noon, 15,867 voters had cast ballots, representing 48% of 2021’s Election Day total.
The strong turnout follows a robust early voting period that saw Alexandria exceed its entire 2021 early voting total. The city recorded 29,881 early votes compared to 25,475 during all of 2021’s early voting period — a 17% increase.
Alexandria recorded 261.3 early votes per 1,000 registered voters, compared to 241.4 in Northern Virginia and 243.7 statewide, according to Virginia Public Access Project data.

Two precincts are voting at different locations Tuesday. The former George Mason School precinct votes at Trinity Church, 2911 Cameron Mills Road, as demolition of the school building began Monday. The Olympus Condos precinct returned to the Olympus Condos building, 6301 Stevenson Ave., after voting at a temporary location in 2024.

The Nov. 4 election includes races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, House of Delegates, commonwealth’s attorney and sheriff. Democrat Abigail Spanberger faces Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in the governor’s race. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi runs against Republican John Reid for lieutenant governor. Democrat Jay Jones faces Republican Jason Miyares for attorney general.
In the House of Delegates, Democrats Alfonso Lopez in the 3rd District, Charniele Herring in the 4th District and Elizabeth Bennett-Parker in the 5th District are running unopposed. Bryan Porter and Sean Casey also run unopposed for commonwealth’s attorney and sheriff, respectively.
Voters must bring photo identification. Acceptable IDs include a Virginia driver’s license, U.S. passport, employer-issued photo ID or student ID from a Virginia college or university.
Voters without acceptable ID may sign an ID Confirmation Statement and vote with a regular ballot.
