Public hearing set Thursday on ACPS capital budget plan
Community members can weigh in on proposed $340.4 million, 10-year facilities investment
Alexandria City Public Schools will hold a public hearing on Thursday on Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt’s proposed $340.4 million capital improvement plan for fiscal years 2027-2036.
The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room at 1340 Braddock Place. Members of the public can attend in person, watch via Zoom, or sign up to speak.
Kay-Wyatt presented the 10-year capital budget proposal on Nov. 6, outlining plans to address aging infrastructure and prepare for shifting enrollment patterns. The plan includes $27.9 million for fiscal year 2027.
Significant projects in the capital plan include a $105 million modernization of Cora Kelly School for Math, Science, and Technology, the conversion of Jefferson-Houston School into an 850-student middle school, and the conversion of Patrick Henry K-8 School into a K-5 elementary school.
The fiscal year 2027 budget includes $6 million for HVAC repairs and replacements at Ferdinand T. Day Elementary, Mount Vernon Community School, and John Adams Elementary, as well as $5 million for leased space renovations.
The School Board will hold a work session on the capital improvement plan beginning at 6:15 p.m.on Thursday at the exact location. That meeting is scheduled to run until 10 p.m.
Both meetings will be accessible remotely through Zoom. Agendas and related documents are available through BoardDocs on the ACPS website.
The board will hold an additional work session on November 18 and add/delete work sessions on December 11 and December 16, before the final adoption scheduled for December 18. All meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room.
