Remaining City Hall services relocating ahead of major renovation project
Council chambers moving to Del Pepper Resource Center; Old Town Farmers' Market also affected
The City of Alexandria will complete the relocation of the remaining municipal services and employee offices by January 2026, in preparation for significant renovations to City Hall and Market Square.
More than 300 city employees have already moved from their existing offices to temporary or permanent spaces throughout the city. The Office of Housing, Code Administration, and several Finance divisions relocated earlier this year.
The City Manager’s Office, Mayor and City Council Offices, City Clerk, and Department of Planning & Zoning will move to Tavern Square at 421 King St. in January. The City Attorney’s Office will relocate to 123 N. Pitt St., fifth floor.
City Council chambers will relocate to the Del Pepper Resource Center at 4850 Mark Center Dr., with the first meeting at the new location scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13.
The historic Old Town Farmers’ Market will also be affected, temporarily moving to the 100 block of North Royal Street and the courtyard at Tavern Square in January. An exact date has not been announced.
The Department of Finance’s in-person tax services will move to 4850 Mark Center Dr., second floor, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A payment drop box will be available at Bankers Square, 100 N. Pitt St.
City Hall is more than 100 years old, and Market Square has served as a civic gathering place since the city’s founding in 1749. Officials say both facilities need significant updates to repair aging building components, improve technology and accessibility, enhance security, and support community engagement.
Some services will be temporarily paused or offered only virtually during the transition in mid-January. Residents can visit alexandriava.gov/cityhallrelocations for department-specific schedules and updates.
