Road closures set for St. Rita's 5K race Saturday morning
Alexandria streets to be restricted from 7:20-9:45 a.m. as runners support Catholic school fundraiser
The Alexandria Police Department announced temporary road closures Saturday, Nov. 15, as the city hosts the annual St. Rita’s 5K race.
The closures will be in effect from approximately 7:20 to 9:45 a.m., impacting several major roadways in the area.
Race details
The event, which benefits St. Rita Catholic School, kicks off at 8:30 a.m. from George Washington Middle School with a flat, fast, tree-lined out-and-back course along Main Line Boulevard and Potomac Avenue. A 1K kids fun run begins at 8 a.m.
Registration remains open until 11:30 a.m. race day, with the 5K priced at $45 and the children’s fun run at $25. Packet pickup and onsite registration begin at 6:45 a.m.
The race has already raised more than $32,000 toward its $35,000 fundraising goal to support classroom resources, teacher support and monthly appreciation events for St. Rita educators.
Road closures
According to police, the following roads will be closed or restricted during the race:
Main Line Boulevard northbound lanes will be closed from Potomac Avenue to Reed Avenue.
Potomac Avenue will see the most significant impact, with both southbound and northbound lanes closed between East Reed Avenue and Glebe Road.
Glebe Road will maintain access to southbound Potomac Avenue toward Route 1, though northbound lanes will remain closed to accommodate runners.
Transit and parking
The Alexandria Police Department warns that buses operating in the affected area may experience significant delays during the event.
However, race organizers note that the venue is conveniently accessible via the Braddock Road Metro station on the Yellow and Blue lines, with free parking also available at the starting area behind George Washington Middle School.
Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes or allow extra travel time if driving through the area Saturday morning. The closures are expected to be lifted by midmorning once all participants have completed the course.
The awards ceremony and sponsor expo begin at 9:30 a.m., featuring prizes including cash, gift cards and medals for top finishers across various age categories.
