Rosemont crowns winners of sixth annual holiday decor competition
East Walnut Street farmyard display takes top honors in contest honoring former Sheriff Dana Lawhorne
A whimsical farmyard-themed Christmas display has earned one Rosemont home top honors in the neighborhood’s sixth annual holiday decoration competition.
The residence at 27 East Walnut Street claimed first place for its elaborate front yard transformation, which features a large red barn facade emblazoned with “Merry Christmas” and strung with colorful lights. The display includes an assortment of illuminated animal figures — pigs, chickens, a dog in a Santa hat, and a white cat — creating a festive barnyard scene on the lawn of the classic yellow craftsman bungalow.
The Rosemont Citizens Association presented the homeowners with a yard sign marking their victory and a gift card from Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap.
Second place went to 711 Little Street, with the homeowners receiving a gift card from Just Fine Donuts. The home at 212 East Alexandria Avenue took third place.
The competition, established by former Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, has become an annual tradition that brings the historic neighborhood together during the holiday season. Organization began in early December when the association called for volunteers to serve on two teams — one to scout nominees throughout the neighborhood and another to serve as a “blue ribbon” judging panel.
“Thanks to all who helped and sponsored — and to all those who have made the neighborhood bright for the season,” the association wrote in announcing Sunday’s results.

The Rosemont Citizens Association, founded in 1954, is an all-volunteer organization serving approximately 1,500 homes in the tree-lined neighborhood just outside Old Town.
