Titans earn No. 5 seed, will face Fairfax in Region 6C playoffs
Alexandria City to travel Friday for first-round matchup
Alexandria City’s season isn’t over yet.
The Titans earned the No. 5 seed in the Region 6C playoffs and will travel to face No. 4 Fairfax (5-5) on Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round.
Alexandria City (6-4, 3-4 District 4) closed out the regular season with a 24-17 loss at South County on Thursday night. The defeat was the Titans’ second straight after falling 35-0 to West Springfield on Halloween.
The playoff matchup represents a rematch of an Oct. 17 game in which Fairfax defeated Alexandria City 14-7 on the road.
Mayor Alyia Gaskins visited the team recently to deliver a pep talk as the Titans prepare for their postseason run, according to a post on the ACHS Titan Athletics Instagram account.
Top-seeded West Springfield (8-2) will host the winner of No. 8 West Potomac (4-6) at No. 1 in the other first-round games. No. 6 Mount Vernon (7-3) travels to No. 3 Lake Braddock (7-3), while No. 7 Falls Church (7-3) goes to No. 2 South County (7-3).
Dramatic swings marked the Titans’ season. After opening with five consecutive wins — including a 71-0 rout of Lewis and a 42-6 victory over Potomac Senior — Alexandria City stumbled down the stretch, losing four of its final five games.
Close defeats proved costly for the Titans. They fell 21-20 to West Potomac on October 10, before losing 14-7 at Fairfax. Their lone win in the second half of the season came Oct. 24 against Robinson, 14-10.
For the season, Alexandria City outscored opponents 236-171, though 32 of those points came via forfeit in a season-opening win over Lake Braddock. The team finished with a 3-2 home record and a 3-2 road record.
