Titans fall to South County 24-17, finish season 6-4
Alexandria City closes regular season with road loss Friday night
The Alexandria City High School Titans fell to South County 24-17 on Friday night, closing out their regular season with a 6-4 record.
The loss was the Titans’ second straight after dropping a 35-0 decision to West Springfield on Halloween. Alexandria City finished 3-4 in District 4 play, fourth in the final standings.
South County improved to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in district competition with the victory.
The Titans’ season was marked by dramatic swings. After opening with five consecutive wins — including a 71-0 rout of Lewis and a 42-6 victory over Potomac Senior — Alexandria City stumbled down the stretch, losing four of its final five games.
Close defeats proved costly for the Titans. They fell 21-20 to West Potomac on Oct. 10 and lost 14-7 at Fairfax on Oct. 17. Their lone win in the second half of the season came Oct. 24 against Robinson, 14-10.
For the season, Alexandria City outscored opponents 236-171, though 32 of those points came via forfeit in a season-opening win over Lake Braddock. The team finished 3-2 at home and 3-2 on the road.
West Springfield won the District 4 championship with a perfect 7-0 league record. VHSL Region 6D playoffs are scheduled to begin Friday, Nov. 15.
