November 20, 1818: Alexandria Museum Opens in City Hall
The Alexandria Common Council designated space on the second floor of the new City Hall and Market House for an Alexandria Museum. Located at the corner overlooking Cameron and North Royal Streets, the museum was operated by the local Masonic Lodge and hosted significant public receptions, including a monthlong visit by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1824.
When fire destroyed the building in 1871, salvaged objects were relocated to a fireproof room in the 1872 City Hall above the Cameron Street entrance, marked by exterior Masonic symbols. The museum artifacts were transferred to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial upon its completion in 1932.
November 20, 1662: Dame Margaret Brent Re-Patents Old Town Land
Dame Margaret Brent re-patented her 700-acre tract that included present-day Old Town Alexandria. This occurred seven years before John Alexander acquired title to an adjacent 6,000-acre parcel from Robert Howson.
Brent immigrated to Colonial Maryland in 1638 with her siblings after their older brother inherited the family’s English estate. She became America’s first female lawyer and the colony’s most influential woman, serving as executrix of Maryland Governor Lord Calvert’s estate. Using her ancestry and political connections, she amassed significant landholdings across Maryland and Virginia.
After her influence in Maryland declined in the late 1640s, Brent relocated to Virginia in 1650. Though she never married or had children, she strategically secured legal protections to ensure her real estate passed to surviving family members. The 1662 re-patent prepared the way for her final will, signed in 1663.
