The city's annual street-repaving season gets underway Monday, April 20, when the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services resumes paving and maintenance work that is expected to continue through November 2026.

Alexandria maintains sidewalks, alleys and more than 561 lane miles of road, and resurfaces roughly 50 lane miles each year. The work also includes repairs to concrete curbs and gutters and upgrades to curb access ramps to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Sixteen streets are scheduled for resurfacing and repair in the initial phase: Holland Lane, Jamieson Avenue, Peyton Street, LaVerne Avenue, West Bellefonte Avenue, Hillside Terrace, Summit Avenue, Old Dominion Boulevard, Rapidan Court, Holmes Run Parkway, Hawthorne Avenue, Hatton Court, East Abingdon Drive, Fayette Street, Peachtree Place and West Abingdon Drive.

Residents on streets scheduled for work generally get advance notice through project signs or door hangers, and temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted before crews arrive. The city urged drivers to heed the signs to avoid tickets and towing.

Normal paving hours run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some work on heavily traveled roads will be done overnight. Crews will use heavy equipment that can be noisy at times. Access to streets being paved will be limited during working hours, but workers will let local drivers through for driveway access, and roads will be fully reopened each evening for overnight parking and traffic. City staff will be on site to manage the work.

The city said the program is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and infrastructure. Additional information on the resurfacing program is available at alexandriava.gov/Potholes, and questions about major resurfacing projects can be directed to Alex311.
