ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city's annual street-repaving program will work on five streets between Monday and Friday, with two new Old Town blocks joining the rotation and three streets carrying over from last week's schedule, the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services said.
Crews are slated to repave East Abingdon Drive and West Abingdon Drive, each from Washington Street to the end; South Lee Street from Gibbon Street to King Street; Madison Street from North Columbus Street to Washington Street; and Wolfe Street from South Pitt Street to South Royal Street.
South Lee Street and Wolfe Street are the week's new entries, both in Old Town. The two Abingdon Drive segments and Madison Street were also on the city's May 4-8 list. Officials have consistently cautioned that paving schedules are subject to change because of weather, equipment availability, utility coordination and other city projects.
Three of the five streets — both Abingdon segments and South Lee Street — appear on the city's FY 2026 Capital Street Resurfacing Program, which tracks major curb-to-curb resurfacing projects. The capital list rates each street using a pavement condition index, where scores run from 1 to 100 and lower numbers indicate worse conditions. West Abingdon Drive carries a score of 23, East Abingdon Drive 29, and South Lee Street 39. Madison Street and Wolfe Street do not appear on the capital list and are being addressed through routine street maintenance handled by the city's Street Maintenance Division.
The work is part of an annual program that launched April 20 and is expected to continue through November. The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services maintains sidewalks, alleys and more than 561 lane miles of road, and resurfaces about 50 lane miles each year. Crews patch roughly 5,000 potholes annually, and the program includes concrete curb and gutter repairs and upgrades to curb access ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Residents and businesses along the affected streets typically receive advance notice through project signs or letters, and temporary "No Parking" signs are posted before work begins. The city has warned that vehicles left in posted areas are subject to ticketing and towing. Normal paving hours run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some work on heavily traveled corridors will be done overnight, and streets reopen each evening for parking and through traffic.
