A growing partnership
The Legacy Match series began in 2024 through a collaboration with D.C. United co-owner Eyob Joe Mamo, an Ethiopian native and CEO of Capital Petroleum. The partnership aims to develop talent in Ethiopia while bringing the country's clubs and national team to Audi Field, and it expanded that May when the club joined forces with the Ethiopia Football Federation to invest in the sport and connect the local Ethiopian community to soccer in the DMV.
"We are honored to welcome the Ethiopian National Team and proud that Audi Field continues to bring together fans and players from across the global football community," said Dr. Erkut Sogut, D.C. United managing director of soccer operations. "Moments like this highlight the unifying power of the game."
Mamo said the partnership has given Ethiopian players a stage and the community a gathering point.
"This collaboration with D.C. United has allowed the Ethiopia Football Federation to create a meaningful platform for players to showcase their talents while also celebrating and bringing together a community through the power of football," he said.
About the Walia Ibex
Ethiopia's national team, known as the Walia Ibex, won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1962 on home soil. Head coach Yohannes Sahle — appointed in January for his second tenure with the squad — recently led Ethiopia through the preliminary round of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying with a 4-0 aggregate win over São Tomé and Príncipe.
Forward Bereket Desta paced the team during 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying with three goals, including a hat trick in a 6-1 win over Djibouti in March 2025. Forward Abubeker Nassir and Ramkel James, whose goal sealed a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau last October, are also expected to feature.
