ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Construction begins Monday, July 6, on King Street between West Braddock Road and Chinquapin Drive as part of a city project aimed at improving pedestrian, bicycle and transit safety near Alexandria City High School, the city announced.

The work zone runs along the stretch of King Street fronting the ACHS campus, extending from near the Braddock Road intersection to Quincy Street. Students, staff and community members are encouraged to use caution in the work zone and obey all posted signs.

Improvements include the expansion of two bus stops near the school, safer connections for students walking or biking, and a reconfigured lane layout in front of ACHS designed to support safer and more organized drop-off and pick-up activity. The project will also create connections to existing active transportation infrastructure on King Street.

The work follows a design process that began in 2025. City staff identified a preferred design — a protected bike lane paired with a bus pull-off — and the Traffic and Parking Board approved it in July 2025. The project builds on recommendations from a 2023 Safe Routes to School walk audit of the high school, which identified opportunities to improve safety for students walking and biking to campus.

The project is part of the city's broader Safe Routes to School Program, which promotes walking and biking to school through infrastructure improvements, enforcement and safety education.

The work does not include changes to the King Street/Quaker Lane/Braddock Road intersection, though the design was reviewed to ensure it does not negatively affect operations there.
