ALEXANDRIA, Va. — An automated license plate reader system goes live Friday in the parking garage at Park + Ford, a 435-unit apartment building on Ford Avenue, over the objections of 109 residents who signed a petition asking management to stop it.
Residents were told about the change Sept. 4, four weeks before the Oct. 2 launch. Two of them, Brittnee Sellers and Cassandra McGraw, wrote to management Sept. 12 raising concerns about privacy, data collection and consent. Management responded Sept. 25 with answers from the vendor. The rollout is proceeding.
"We just want to park at our homes without being required to participate in an expanding surveillance and data-collection ecosystem," Sellers wrote to the Brief.
