Alexandria City Council to consider Potomac Yard development, residential conversions Saturday
Public hearing includes final approval for 640 homes in South Potomac Yard and multiple Metro-adjacent projects
The Alexandria City Council will hold its monthly public hearing Saturday at 9:30 a.m., addressing several major development proposals and zoning changes across the city.
The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber at City Hall, located at 301 King St., and also via Zoom. The session includes the Potomac Yard final development plans and multiple residential conversion projects near Metro stations.
Potomac Yard development
Council will consider final approval of amendments enabling the development of the last vacant parcels in South Potomac Yard. The Planning Commission approved the proposals 6-0 with one abstention last week.
The amendments for properties at 601 E. Glebe Road, 2601, and 2901 Main Line Blvd. would enable the development of 640 new homes near the Potomac Yard Metro station, including 88 committed affordable housing units. The changes would increase the maximum number of residential units while decreasing office space in Coordinated Development District #10.
Metro-adjacent projects
The Jamieson/Carlyle Block B project, located at 2051 Jamieson Ave., would convert an existing office building to residential use, with heights reaching up to 146 feet, and include affordable housing units. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval with amendments.
Bozzuto Development Company is seeking approval to build a multi-unit residential dwelling at 4880 Mark Center Drive with reduced parking requirements. The Planning Commission recommended approval by a vote of 6-0.
Braddock West extension
The Braddock West extension project, previously deferred from the October meeting, returns for consideration at 727 N. West St. The development would include multi-unit residential dwellings with ground-floor commercial space and a private or fraternal club use. The Planning Commission recommended approval 6-0-1.
Restaurant outdoor seating
The Council will also hear a request for extended hours and outdoor seating at La Pluma Coffee and Wine, located at 1000 Cameron St. The Planning Commission recommended approval 6-1, with amendments.
Consent agenda
The consent calendar includes a special use permit for a parking reduction at 1625 Prince St., where an office building will be converted to residential use.
The Council will also consider a request from Housing Alexandria for the city to provide a secondary guarantee to facilitate Virginia Housing construction financing, as well as the final passage of ordinances related to taxicabs, food truck vending locations, and supplemental appropriations for fiscal year 2026.
Public participation
The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast on government channel 70, streamed on the city’s website, and accessible via Zoom.
Residents can speak on items not listed on the agenda during the public discussion period. The first 15 speakers will be heard at the start of the meeting, with the remaining speakers presenting after the docketed items.
Those wishing to address the council must register and may submit written statements to CouncilComment@alexandriava.gov.
