Your guide to Alexandria's public meetings
Here’s your weekly guide to public meetings in Alexandria — what’s happening, what matters, and how to participate.
What to Watch
City Council convenes at new temporary home
City Council holds its first legislative meeting at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. — the new temporary home for council meetings while City Hall undergoes a two-and-a-half-year, $123.6 million renovation.
The docket includes tentative collective bargaining agreements with the city’s police officers, firefighters, and municipal workers totaling nearly $32 million over three years. The police contract would raise starting salaries from $63,988 to $75,000 and provide an early retirement option at 20 years of service. The firefighters’ agreement would reduce work schedules from 49 to 46 hours per week. The AFSCME contract represents the first agreement for the city’s administrative and technical workers, who voted to unionize in late 2024.
Council will also consider adopting ALX Forward, the city’s first coordinated economic development plan since 2007, and an ordinance to begin soliciting proposals for a new operator for the Torpedo Factory Arts Center.
DASH Board to hear fleet maintenance update
The DASH Board of Directors meets Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Beatley Central Library to receive a fleet maintenance presentation and ridership report. The board will also acknowledge outgoing member Laura Gates, who is stepping down to transfer to Alexandria City Libraries. City Manager James Parajon has appointed Director of Finance Kevin Greenlief to fill her seat.
Staff will provide updates on the Duke Street Transitway design, a proposed Old Town Circulator stop rebalancing plan, and the West End Transitway operations plan. The city manager has approved Scenario 4A as the preferred operating plan for the West End Transitway, which would provide all-day, high-frequency DASH service on WET 1 and peak-period WMATA express service on WET 2.
School Board Committee to discuss redistricting, city-schools structure
The Strategy & Accountability Committee meets Monday at 5 p.m. via Zoom to receive an update on redistricting implementation and discuss proposed new City-Schools subcommittee structures.
School Board to discuss state funding formula
The School Board holds a work session Thursday at 5 p.m. to discuss Virginia’s K-12 funding formula and receive an update from the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. The session will be held at the School Board Meeting Room at 1340 Braddock Place.
Storm Sewer Project design update
The city hosts a design update meeting for the Clifford, Fulton and Manning Storm Sewer Project on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Ave.). The $830,000 flood mitigation project, funded by a HUD grant, will provide drainage improvements to townhouses along the 3000 block of Fulton and Manning streets. Construction is anticipated from May 2026 through October 2027. A virtual attendance option is available via Zoom.
