On the Docket: A weekly preview of city and school board meetings (January 19–24)
Your guide to Alexandria's public meetings
Here’s your weekly guide to public meetings in Alexandria — what’s happening, what matters, and how to participate.
What to Watch
School Board to receive superintendent’s FY 2027 budget proposal
The School Board meets on Thursday at 6 p.m. and will receive Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt’s proposed FY 2027 Combined Funds Budget — the annual spending plan that funds programs and activities across Alexandria City Public Schools.
The presentation kicks off the budget season, with the School Board scheduled to hold work sessions and public hearings over the coming weeks before adopting a final budget. The meeting also includes approval of continuous school improvement plans for schools identified for state and federal accountability support, which must be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education by January 30.
The meeting will be held at the School Board Meeting Room at 1340 Braddock Place and broadcast on cable channel 71.
Transportation Commission holds first public hearing on GO Alex Fund
The Transportation Commission meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. to hold the first public hearing on the GO Alex Fund budget — a pooled transportation fund created under a policy City Council adopted in May 2023.
Under the policy, most new developments pay into the city-managed fund for 30 years rather than operating individual transportation management programs. The fund held $535,000 as of July 1, 2025. Staff is proposing $220,000 in expenditures for fiscal year 2026, covering surveys, grant matches, and bicycle safety education.
Commissioners will also hear that the city has secured a $600,000 federal grant to update its Vision Zero Action Plan, which set a goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2028. That deadline is now two years away. The funding will support updated crash analysis and road safety audits of up to three corridors.
The commission will also take public comment on two regional grant applications: one for a bicycle network gap analysis and another targeting safety improvements along Mt. Vernon Avenue between Braddock Road and West Glebe Road. The meeting is virtual via Zoom.
Duke Street Land Use Plan workshops continue
The city hosts three community workshops this week for residents to weigh in on the Duke Street Land Use Plan. Each session covers the same material presented at December’s open house, with facilitated conversations with staff and neighbors.
The workshops are scheduled for:
Tuesday, January 20 — 6:30–8 p.m. at Port City Brewing (3950 Wheeler Ave.)
Wednesday, January 21 — 6:30–8 p.m. at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.)
Thursday, January 22 — 6:30–8 p.m. at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.)
Registration is encouraged at research.net/r/AlexandriaVA-DSLUPworkshop. The online community open house closes January 23.
Waterfront Commission to discuss Mount Vernon Trail improvements
The Waterfront Commission meets Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. to discuss proposed National Park Service improvements to the Mount Vernon Trail and waterfront near the former Potomac River Generating Station site.
NPS is preparing an environmental assessment that includes replacing the aging metal cage section of the trail with a boardwalk, adding a non-motorized watercraft launch, enhancing trail connections, and installing new overlooks along the Potomac River. Emergency stabilization work on the trail is expected to begin this winter or spring.
The commission will consider whether to submit a formal comment letter to NPS. Public comments on the project must be submitted by February 12 at parkplanning.nps.gov/oldtownnorth.
The commission meets at the Lee Center Gold Room (1108 Jefferson St.).
City Council holds Saturday public hearing
City Council convenes for a public hearing Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center — an unusual weekend meeting. The docket had not been released at publication time. Check alexandriava.gov/Dockets for updates.
MLK Day: City offices closed, job fair, trash delayed
City offices are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Shiloh Baptist Church and the City of Alexandria are co-hosting “Building the Dream Together,” a job fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School (1501 Cameron St.). The event connects residents with local employers and career-building resources. Registration is available at alexandriava.gov.
