ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Drivers parking at metered spaces across Alexandria will pay more starting Wednesday as two changes approved by city council take effect July 1.
The hourly meter rate will rise to $2.75, up from $1.75, and the base fine for parking citations will increase to $55 per violation — the first hike to the standard penalty since 2007, when it went from $25 to $40.
Both changes were approved by Alexandria City Council at its April 18 public hearing as part of the fiscal year 2027 budget process.
The new rates apply to all metered parking in the city. Most metered spaces in Old Town and Carlyle require payment Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Meters remain free on Sundays and federal holidays. Metered areas include Old Town along King Street, Carlyle, Eisenhower East, Potomac Yard and Oakville Triangle.

Higher fines already on the books for specific violations — including $200 for parking in an HOV lane and $500 for parking in a space reserved for a person with a disability — are not affected by the change.
The city regularly patrols and enforces parking, stopping and standing regulations on city streets, including both posted restrictions and city code requirements. More information is available at alexandriava.gov/parking/parking-meter-information.
