ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Drivers and bus riders along Richmond Highway should brace for two weeks of construction starting Monday, as the City of Alexandria begins maintenance work on the corridor's Bus Rapid Transit lanes.
The work, scheduled May 11 through May 25, will close the BRT lanes on Richmond Highway/Route 1 between Swann Avenue and Glebe Road. Bus stops in the work area will be temporarily relocated to the regular travel lanes, where signs will mark the new locations through the end of the project.
What to expect
The city said the impact on single-occupancy vehicles should be limited, but drivers should anticipate some delays as buses are rerouted into regular travel lanes alongside passenger traffic. Crews will replace sections of damaged pavement during the closure.
Residents, commuters, and travelers are encouraged to share the road carefully in active work zones and with temporary bus traffic in the regular lanes.

Why it matters
The maintenance is part of a broader push to improve BRT service and strengthen local and regional public transit connections across Alexandria. The city is carrying out the work in cooperation with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and DASH, Alexandria's local bus service.
