ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Washington Spirit lost 2-1 at the Kansas City Current on Sunday, giving up two goals in five first-half minutes after taking an early lead, and will go into the final day of the NWSL regular season holding third place by two points.
Washington is 16-9-4 with 52 points. Kansas City, which moved up to fourth, is 15-9-5 with 50. The top four teams on the final table host a quarterfinal, and the Spirit close at home against Chicago Stars FC at 5 p.m. Sunday, when all eight matches kick off at once.
A win or a draw would lock up a home quarterfinal. No team below the Spirit can reach 54 points, so anything but a loss leaves them in the top four.
