The city's Citizen Corps Council will host an information night on Monday aimed at connecting residents with the network of local organizations working to keep Alexandria prepared for emergencies.

The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson St. Registration is requested in advance.

The council, chaired by Patrick Moran, brings together citizen volunteers, local leaders, and first-responder agencies, including public safety, emergency medical services, health, and transportation and environmental services. Its mission is to encourage Alexandrians to prepare their families, neighborhoods and communities, and to lend support to emergency response agencies when appropriate.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet representatives from the organizations that make up the council and learn how to get directly involved. Organizers say the evening is designed to be both informative and consultative, with members of the public encouraged to share their perspectives through a short survey.

The council currently has four vacancies, including seats reserved for a representative of the business community, a representative of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, a citizen designated by the Alexandria School Board and a City Council member. Appointees serve three-year terms, and members are asked to commit roughly four hours per month. The full council meets on the fourth Monday of every other month.

"All residents are encouraged to participate to help our preparedness efforts reach every corner of the city," the city said in announcing the event.

Residents seeking more information can contact Marc Barbiere, the city's emergency management coordinator and staff liaison to the council, at 703-746-5220, or visit alexandriava.gov/CitizenCorps.
