Alexandria eyes extension of Beauregard Trail to Fairfax County line

Feasibility study launched as city seeks to close gaps for pedestrians and cyclists along busy four-lane corridor

Building from recommendations in the Alexandria Mobility Plan and AlexWest Small Area Plan, the City is undertaking a feasibility study to extend the Beauregard Trail from it's current terminus at Fillmore Avenue to the western Alexandria boundary with Fairfax County. (City of Alexandria)

The City of Alexandria is studying whether it can extend the Beauregard Trail roughly 1.5 miles along a stretch of North Beauregard Street that officials say leaves pedestrians and cyclists with limited and inconsistent connections through one of the city's busiest corridors.

The feasibility study, which launched in early 2026, examines options to extend the existing trail from its current terminus at Fillmore Avenue south to the Fairfax County border. The four-lane corridor connects high-density residential neighborhoods, employment centers, parks, retail, and schools — including Northern Virginia Community College, Ferdinand T. Day Elementary, and William Ramsey Elementary — but currently prioritizes vehicle traffic.

City officials say the study is a prerequisite for securing future grant funding for full design and construction of the trail. No construction is included in the current project scope.

The study stems from recommendations in the Alexandria Mobility Plan and the AlexWest Small Area Plan, a community-driven planning effort approved by the city in November 2024 following a two-year engagement process.

City staff and a design team will assess existing conditions and develop design concepts before conducting community engagement in spring 2026 to gather input on preferred options.

Residents can weigh in at a virtual public meeting on Wednesday, March 25, at 7 p.m. The meeting will cover the project's scope, existing conditions and ways the public can provide feedback. Advance registration is required at alexandriava.gov/go/7749, where a recording will also be posted after the meeting.

The Beauregard Trail project is one of several transportation initiatives underway in the corridor. The city is also implementing the West End Transitway, a bus rapid transit system along the Van Dorn/Beauregard corridor connecting the Van Dorn Metrorail Station to the Pentagon, and is separately constructing a shared-use path along North Beauregard Street between Fillmore Avenue and Berkeley Street.
