The city of Alexandria is rolling out four seasonal maintenance programs this spring, targeting everything from pothole repairs to gateway cleanups as the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services ramps up its warm-weather operations.
Citywide street sweeping began Monday, March 2. Crews will make three passes across city-maintained streets and key corridors, with each pass estimated to take 12 weeks. The effort is designed to keep neighborhoods and commercial corridors clean and to prevent debris from running off into local waterways.
Residents are reminded to observe posted "No Parking" restrictions on street sweeping blocks. Parking restrictions remain in effect even when sweeping is canceled due to inclement weather. Additional sweeping can be requested through Alex311 online or by calling 703.746.4311.
Potholes next
The city's spring Pothole Palooza gets underway Monday, March 30, launching a monthlong push to identify and repair winter road damage along Alexandria's right of way. Residents should expect periodic lane closures as crews move through the city.
The program focuses on major street networks and does not cover public alleys or parking spaces. Weekly progress updates will be posted to the department's Facebook and X accounts. Pothole Palooza is expected to wrap up by Wednesday, April 30, after which residents should report potholes through Alex311. General street repaving operations resume Monday, April 21, and continue through early November.
Gateways get a scrub
Spring Gateway Cleaning begins Saturday, April 4, with crews working Saturdays until all locations are complete. The program targets key entrances into the city following the winter season. Corridors included in this year's effort are:
North and South Washington Street, South Patrick Street, the Eisenhower Connector, Eisenhower Avenue at Van Dorn and Telegraph, Edsall Road at Yokum and Winterview, Duke Street, Beauregard Street, Seminary Road, King Street, Quaker Lane, Glebe Road, Mount Vernon Avenue and Route 1 at Potomac Yard.
Weekly updates will also be posted to the department's social media accounts.
Mulch orders open now
The city is currently accepting orders for its spring leaf mulch delivery program. Deliveries begin Tuesday, April 1, and run through mid-June on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available supply.
Delivery fees are $65 for a half-load of 3 to 6 cubic yards and $130 for a full load of 9 to 12 cubic yards.
Residents who prefer to skip the delivery fee can pick up free mulch at 4215 Eisenhower Ave., Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Commercial vehicles and machinery are not permitted at the site. Violations can be reported to Alex311; call 911 for emergencies.
