ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Police, election officials and other city and regional agencies are spending Friday afternoon at Alexandria Police Department headquarters working through how they would handle threats to the Nov. 3 election, in a tabletop exercise run by the Committee for Safe and Secure Elections.

About 50 people are attending the session, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. They included representatives of the Alexandria Police Department, the Alexandria Sheriff's Office, the Arlington County and Prince William County police departments, the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, the City Attorney's Office, Transportation and Environmental Services, the Department of Emergency Communications, parks and recreation, and information technology staff.

The Alexandria Brief was invited to the opening of the session and left after the introductions, before the scenarios began, because of the sensitive security material involved.

"While we're here at the police station and while, you know, we're hosting this event, this is not about policing," Police Chief Tarrick McGuire told attendees. "For me, it's about democracy."
